If you have asbestos in your home, choosing qualified and experienced asbestos contractors is essential. If you are overwhelmed with the amount of asbestos contractors in the Brisbane region, there are some great ways to know if the business you are choosing is experienced and qualified.
Government Licensing for Asbestos Contractors
To remove friable asbestos in Queensland, a business must hold a class A licence. These businesses can remove any amount of friable asbestos and more than ten square metres of non-friable asbestos.
Friable asbestos is material that contains asbestos and is in a powder form or can be crumbled, or reduced to a powder simply through hand pressure when dry.
Non-Friable or Bonded Asbestos
A business that holds a class B licence can only remove more than ten square metres of non-friable asbestos or any asbestos contaminated dust or debris that has occurred during the removal for the non-friable asbestos. These businesses cannot remove friable asbestos in any amount.
Non-friable, or bonded asbestos, include cement sheeting, otherwise known as fibro. This material was used across Queensland homes prior to the 90’s and can be found in external cladding, roofs, fences, kitchens and bathrooms.
While no licence is required to remove less than 10 square metres of non-friable asbestos, this isn’t a product you should take lightly. Asbestos can cause plenty of illnesses if handled the wrong way, and while it may not affect you straight away, you could find the effects happening 30 or 40 years down the track.
Other Factors to Consider when Choosing Asbestos Contractors
There are a few other things that you should consider including the experience and knowledge of the company, the levels of safety they undertake and the cost to do the job.
Choosing asbestos contractors with a high level of knowledge and experience is essential. You need to choose a company who can identify asbestos in your home and provide the right advice on removal.
