Asbestos can be quite dangerous, especially if not handled correctly. It is one of those building products where you safer to call in asbestos removals experts than attempt to identify and remove yourself.

DIY home renovations are very common these days, and asbestos can be found in a range of building products and around the home – some you may not even be aware of. Depending on when your house was built, you may find asbestos in your wall and floor tiles, under carpet and vinyl, on ceilings, on roofs and roof gutters. You may also find it in areas such as textured paints, spray-on insulation, sealants or insulation on hot water pipes.

Since 2010, a third of cases reported to the national mesothelioma register (that’s the register for asbestos related illnesses) were from non-occupational sources. This is likely to be related to an increase in DIY renovations.

Do I Need Asbestos Removals Services Before My Reno?

Generally the rule of thumb is:

  • if your house was built before the mid-1980’s it is highly likely to contain asbestos materials
  • if your house was built between the mid-1980’s and 1990, there is likely to be some asbestos containing materials
  • if your house was built after 1990, it is unlikely to contain asbestos materials, however this is not certain
  • if your house was build after 2003, you are likely to be safe from asbestos materials in your home.
